Holder of a Bachelor degree in Law, the Belgian mezzo-soprano Julie BAILLY won the First Prizes and higher degrees in Song and Lyric Art from the Royal Conservatory of Liège and Brussels (classes of Nicolas Christou and Madi Urbain). In 2003 she was a finalist in the Mario Lanza Competition in Filignano (Italy). After two years of perfecting courses at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel under the direction of José Van Dam, she graduated with distinction. Throughout her training, she followed the teachings of Albrecht Klora, Mireille Alcantara, Andréas Scholl, Tom Krauz… She is currently studying with Daniel Ottevaere.
She performs regularly in concert (oratorio and recital) in works by Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Rossini, Offenbach, Debussy … She has sung under the direction of conductors such as Bruno Campanella, Guy Van Waas (and les Agrémens), Pierre Cao (with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra), Louis Langrée (and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège), Yvan Törtz , Kasushi Ono, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Paolo Arrivabeni (at the ORW) …
At the Vlaamse Opera, she played the following roles: Glasha (Kat’a Kabanova by Janacek directed by Robert Carsen), Schwertleite (Die Walküre directed by Ivo van Hove), soeur Mathilde (le Dialogue des Carmelites by Poulenc, directed by Robert Carsen).
At the Monnaie/Munt, she performed in Fidalma (Il Matrimonio segreto by Cimarosa – direction : Vincent Boussart), Maddalena (Viaggio a Reims by Rossini, direction L Ronconi), Mother Goose (Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress directed by Robert Lepage). This is also where she was given the opportunity to work on the role of Geneviève (Pelléas et Mélisande) in a production of Pierre Audi.
After successful debut at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in the role of Fyodor (Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov), we can regulalry be seen on the Liege scene. She has performed Le Page in Salome by Strauss, Rosalia in The Equivoco Stravagante by Rossini, Annina in La Traviata, Leona in La Belle Hélène by Offenbach, Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri by Rossini, Lisbé in Zémire et Azor by Grétry, Doralice in La Gazzetta by Rossini, Tisbé in Rossini’s Cenerentola, Giannetta in the Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, Armelinde in the P Viardot Cendrillon, Lucilla in the Rossini ‘s Scala di seta and Venus in the Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers.
Abroad, it has already performed in France (Festival d’Ambronay, Festival d’Avignon, concerts in Paris, Lille, Rouen, Grenoble, Limoges, ..), in Germany (Fall Festival in Düsseldorf) , Switzerland (Opera Festival in Sint-Moritz and in Basel), in Spain (Festival of Santander), in Luxembourg (with the Philharmonic Orchestra), in Morocco …
Very interested in contemporary art, she had the chance to participate in cantatas Garrett List (« Au Coeur du monde » and « Etat de siège »), and the production « Anathema » by Groupov at the Avignon Festival.
This season, she was Dido (« Dido & Eneas – Purcell – Festival Mubafa)
This season, she’ll sing soon Doralice (La Gazzeztta – Rossini) in Tel Aviv’s Opera House.
